The Golden Temple also known as Harmandir Sahib was founded in the late sixteenth century by Guru Arjan in the heart of Amritsar Punjab. Under Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s patronage the sanctum’s marble roof was gilded in the early nineteenth century, giving rise to its iconic golden facade.
