The difference between papier mâché and pulp ware was that pulp ware was waterproof. The chief raw materials were wood pulp, jute bagging and other vegetable fibres and rags. The linen rags which were required to make all this paper were not available in sufficiently large quantities in Thetford itself, and were brought to the town by river.
