This beautifully decorated Palembang (capital of Sumatra) bamboo lacquerware was likely made by Chinese Peranakan artisans. Lacquerware pieces like this were meant for a bride to store her dowry. This lacquerware features a combination of black and orange lacquered bamboo adorned with intricate designs and motifs on the lid. The designs and motifs referred to joy, happiness, and fertility. 13” diameter by 6” height. 20th century. Purchased the lacquerware in Indonesia approximately 25 years ago.
