Features like thru-tang handle construction, peened thru-tang stainless steel pommel and guard, 2mm rounded edge thickness make these two brutal weapons on the battle field. The cord wrapped leather grip feels exceptional in the hand with an oval cross section and slight barrel shape to keep fatigue at bay. The grip is large enough to accomodate armoured hands. A respectable fuller runs the length of both pieces to lighten and counter balance the swords overall. A wood core and leather wrapped scabbard tipped with a stainless chape comes with each sword. The blade is forged from 9260 high carbon spring steel and is tempered to about 50 HRC, providing a long lasting sword that will take a lot of punishment. The guard needs special mention, featuring the King-Peen system. King-Peen is essentially a steel tab on the guard under the grip that is pinned through the tang of the sword. This process keeps the guard from going loose after a lengthy campaign without compromising the strength of the hilt. The pommel is pressed into place and hot peened. Combine these two processes and you get a sword that rings like a bell when struck. Others coming soon. These were commissioned by CAS Iberia as an alternative to the Paul Chen Hanwei practical swords, and initial impression of experienced steel fighters in my group is GOOD! The 9260 spring steel should prove to be more resilient and you’ll see in video reviews the blades even have a slight flex to them. The larger grips are especially nice for gauntleted hands. The wider edges (2mm vs Hanwei 1.56 mm and slightly wider, more rounded tip are nice refinements as well that make these safer for sparring. Based on length, shape and fullered blade I’d classify this as an Oakshott Type X but with Godfred triple lobed pommel and forward curved cross guard; common in the late Viking age, remaining in use up to the 13th century. It features a broad and flat blade with an average length of 80 centimeters (2.6 ft) with a very wide and shallow fuller running almost the entire length of the blade but fading out just before the point, which is typically rounded. The grip has the same average length as earlier Viking swords of about 9 centimetres (3.5 in). The tang is usually very flat and broad, and tapers sharply towards the pommel. The cross or cross-guard is of square section, about 18–20 centimeters (7.1–7.9 in), tapering towards the tips. The type X is narrower and longer than the typical Viking sword, representing a transitional type to the knightly sword of the Middle Ages. •••••1050 vs 9260 Spring Steel Sword Buyers Guide: 9260 Spring Steel is a lot more resilient and tougher than Cold Steel’s 1050. On the whole, most Cold Steel swords are tempered very well, but tend to be a bit thick. The 9260 gets the same and a better toughness without needing such a beefy blade, so the end result is – 9260 is the best in terms of durability. I really haven’t seen anything else out there in this price range that comes close. I’m a collector and a weekend warrior, active in my local HEMA group. These very popular and affordable weapons feature authentic hilt styling, with fully tempered un-edged and un-pointed blades. The blades are crafted from high-carbon steel, hardened to mid 50s HRC, which restricts edge-notching to acceptable levels while providing resilience and protection against brittleness.
