During the Vietnam War, the POW*MIA design was created in 1972 by Newt Heisley. POW wife Evelyn Grubb campaigned for this cause to the government and local organizations. In 1988, National POW*MIA Recognition Day was passed by Congress. In 1990, Congress passed US Public Law 101-355 recognizing it as a symbol of our Nation’s commitment to resolving the fate of those who were or are prisoners of war and missing and unaccounted for in action in Southeast Asia and all American wars.
